Water Leaks Cause Water Damage

Water leaks can be one of the most expensive problems you can face as a homeowner. All water leaks need to be dealt with immediately. Even small water leaks, whether in your kitchen, laundry room, or bathroom, can cause big issues over time if left unfixed. To protect your home, yard, and wallet, there are plenty of things you can do to fix small leaks before they become a huge problem.

To begin, let’s explore how water leaks can exist within your home and how to take care of them quickly and effectively.

Why Small Leaks Turn Into a Huge Problem

You may not think that a dripping faucet or leaky pipe could cause serious damage – but you could not be more wrong. The reason small water leaks cause such an impact is that they are often hard to detect. Most of these smaller leaks do not let water rush in, rather they allow water to slowly fill the surrounding areas, making them hard to notice at first. This is what allows them to cause serious damage that can wreak havoc on your home’s foundation, floors, ceiling, attic, and more, sometimes going unnoticed until a catastrophic failure happens.

Not only can leaks damage your home, it is also incredibly wasteful. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. That is the amount of water needed to take more than 180 showers! Overall, you are bound to save quite a bit of money on your water bill to seal up any leaks around your home. There are many great suggestions on the EPA site to look for and correct water leaks.

Common Signs of Water Leaks and What To Look For

When it comes to a leaky home, there will be plenty of signs to look for. If you experience any of the following, it may be time to contact a water damage expert like ServiceMaster to assess the problem and make the proper repairs:

  • A general feeling of dampness throughout the home
  • Corrosion on fixtures such as screws and nails
  • Uneven floor surfaces, like buckling wood or lifting of vinyl
  • Stained or rotting carpet, or rusting of carpet fixings
  • Condensation forming on surfaces throughout the home
  • Mold or fungi forming on surfaces (this can also be caused by poor ventilation)
  • Musty or damp odors
  • Missing shingles from the roof
  • Sagging of ceiling linings
  • Stained drywall or other surfaces

Water Leaks are an Inevitable Part of Home Ownership

Where water meets structure, there will almost always be leaks that can cause damage. Just because you cannot see or hear a leak doesn’t mean there aren’t multiple areas where your home’s plumbing or structure may be susceptible to water infiltration.

Pipes behind walls or ceilings, missing shingles on the roof, missing window flashing, and more can leave risks for leaking. You may not even be able to notice it before it is too late; water leaks can seem invisible. Sometimes, water damage can take years to repair, causing a musty smell that is incredibly hard to get rid of. This can hurt the resale value of your home and can lower your overall quality of life.

There is good news, however, it is generally an easy process to hire an experienced water damage mediation company to pinpoint and fix leaks, even if they are not visible. ServiceMaster, for example, uses special equipment to assess the extent of leaks and stop them before they cause serious harm to your home.

Disaster Cleanup In Midtown Minneapolis

Posted on July 24, 2020.

Disaster clean-up is dangerous work

ServiceMaster specializes in disaster cleanup. “The vandalism was surreal. There were needles everywhere, holes in the doors, and human feces where it does not belong,” said Jason S. the crew lead for the ServiceMaster team cleaning up the Sheraton Midtown after vandals broke into the hotel and set up camp. It was random and rampant; it looks as if they had been living there. For several days, vandals moved from room to room in the 140-room hotel, not operational, in Midtown, Minneapolis. When George Floyd lost his life on Saturday, June 7th and protests began in earnest, the owner of the hotel found vandals had moved in and cleared them out.

After dark, violence erupted. At the hotel, more vandals must have found their way in, because there were remnants of Molotov Cocktails and makings for more in rooms cleaned by the ServiceMaster Crew. There was one day that ATF was on the site, looking at questionable packages. ATF has cleared the way for restoration, which is where ServiceMaster shows up. First, they boarded up the windows and doors that were broken and unusable.

Disaster Clean-up is a Big Job

It is a big job, cleaning up after vandals. There have been days that it has been a dangerous job as well. It is hazardous when you are dealing with needles and human excrement that adds to the level of cleaning. Biohazards are just one part of the disaster recovery service you can count on when you hire ServiceMaster to complete the job.

When cleaning out a property, you try to save what you can. This was a total loss. The insurance adjuster also made several appearances. There are things that need to be coordinated with the insurance company. Disaster cleanup needs documentation. Every day the crew takes many photos.

Disaster Clean-up After Vandals

“It was not their property to destroy, which is why we must take photos of everything for the insurance adjusters, and we are happily doing this,” said the ServiceMaster crew on site. “Some days there are as many as 40 workers in Midtown, Minneapolis. We want to help the business owner recoup from his losses as quickly as possible.” It has been devastating, and disaster cleanup usually is. Sometimes it is a family home hit by a tornado or a family room in the basement completely damaged with sewer backup. This specific disaster is just so profound. ServiceMaster, MN has never dealt with the damage and destruction at this scale before. This is 140 rooms. “We go room by room and we gut and remove. Trucks and dumpsters haul away the debris. We estimate it will take eight weeks to completely clean.” ServiceMaster teams added to the conversation.

In at least two of the rooms, the beds were burned. There was at least one pop and ice machine destroyed. Vending machines were emptied. Televisions were ripped from their mounts in the rooms on the walls. Garbage was strewn everywhere. There was water damage from the sprinkler system to contend with as well. After the fires, the sprinklers engaged, and everything became wet and damaged.

Disaster Clean-Up Continues

As the days go on, the cleanup continues, and the morale of the team working is high. The crews are making a difference. There is security on-site and each day brings improvement to the project. Early on it was garbage and decimation. Now, they are documenting and cleaning up debris. The ServiceMaster team is happy to help the owner, it has been such an unfortunate situation for his business.

Disaster cleanup is one of the many services that ServiceMaster prides itself on providing, comfort and satisfaction in even the worst circumstances. There are many jobs that ServiceMaster takes on from hoarding to trauma cleanup. These crews are happy to report to work and feel that they are making a difference. ServiceMaster wants you to know that they are a name you can trust. Even before disaster strikes, you have their yellow vans in your mind. Preparation is key. Not All Disasters are Natural

In the end, disaster cleanup is never fun for anyone involved. Disaster cleanup is hard work and the ServiceMaster team rises to the occasion. They are on-site, clearing, cleaning, taking inventory, and documenting since the damage cleanup began. It will take time, but the ServiceMaster team will help the business owner come out on the other side of an exceptionally large disaster.

Smelly Carpets: Think of Where Your Shoes Have Been!

Posted on July 17, 2020.

several dangling legs with various shoes on them picturesque shoes smelly feet
Sometimes we don’t think where our shoes have been, and they can cause smelly carpets.

Smelly carpets signal that it is time for a professional carpet cleaning. Smelly carpets may sometimes occur because your shoes smell. We tend to wear our shoes and sandals barefoot in the summer and we run around shoeless in our homes, transferring odors from our feet to the carpets. Sometimes, this is just surface odor and can be vacuumed up, but other times, smelly carpets are a reminder that it is time to get our carpets professionally cleaned. Your smelly carpets serve as that reminder.

A quick story:

Just think of where your shoes have been and imagine this scenario…..
There was a guy, who owned a zoo…there is a movie about that now.
He woke up in the middle of the night to a nightmare where he had eaten his shoe.
Surely, he would die because that shoe had been into the lions’ den where there was rotting food on the den floor. He had been in the monkey pen, where there was poo all over the place. He cleaned the donkey and stood in the hair. He was covered in sloth snot, as was the sloth sanctuary.

At the MN Zoo, there is a farm and there can be animal manure that is stepped in. Not to mention horses, pigs, and sheep pens that you might walk through.

There are a lot of places that the man who owned the zoo could get dirty and bring that dirt into his home. His nightmare was that he ate the shoe that touched all the dirt. That is what our carpets do.

How it happens:

Smelly carpets happen when our carpet fibers are compromised with dirt, dander, and dust. Summer humidity levels can release trapped dirt from the fibers and make them smell.

The man who owns the zoo is only an illustration of how poorly we take care of where we step. Many homes require you to leave your shoes outdoors or in the garage. When you change into a pair of house shoes, you help keep your carpets cleaner. You train yourself to leave the dirt and grime of the zoo, or the out of doors, outside. This helps prevent smelly carpets.

The story with the man who owns the zoo is a little rhyme. His nightmare ends in disaster, but he can call ServiceMaster. ServiceMaster is a professional carpet cleaning company. Not only do they specialize in carpet cleaning, but they provide many services. Smelly carpets will not prevail.

ServiceMaster does more than clean carpets!

ServiceMaster also provides services in disaster restoration, trauma cleanup, fire damage, smoke damage, mold removal as well as vandalism cleanup, window cleaning, air duct cleaning, and water damage restoration.

Smelly Carpets: What Can I Do?

Posted on July 11, 2020.

Deodorize shoes in the summer months if you experience smelly carpets

Smelly carpets are a real problem in the summer. It is now July, and we are in the thick of summertime here in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where humidity levels reach all-time highs. This can cause the carpets in your home to release trapped odors. When smelly carpets are in your house, you want to act quickly.

Smelly carpets can ruin your day, especially if you are planning to have people over. People complain in the summertime of the musty smell and carpets smelling like feet because we tend to run around barefoot more often. Be sure to deodorize shoes; musty smelling shoes may be your problem.

You first need to determine if you are dealing with a musty smell, caused by mold and need a mold mitigation service, or just a nasty smelly carpet in which you should run a dehumidifier and the air conditioning in your home. Never dump pure baking soda onto your whole carpets to clean them. Use pure baking soda for spot cleaning only, or in a vinegar-water solution for spot cleaning. If you are looking for carpet deodorizers, this is what you are looking for, but remember, this only adds scent to your carpet. https://www.armandhammer.com/en/baking-soda/carpet-deodorizers

These carpet deodorizers have granules 5-7 times that of pure baking soda. It will vacuum up and is safer for you to breathe. Pure baking soda has very fine particulate matter and is not good for vacuuming your whole carpet.

Smelly Carpets in Summertime:

The summertime in the Midwest is a particularly hard time for carpets. The fibers release the natural odor with the humidity levels that rise. If you find yourself with smells that will not go away, be sure you are trying to keep your home as dry as possible. You think that opening windows will help clear the air, but you are adding humidity to your home. Running your air conditioner or a dehumidifier will be helpful

for smelly carpets. You can call us to help with the smells in your carpet as our high-powered suction and heat-activated water will clean your carpets including the pad. We will remove all the odors, the correct way.

Smelly Carpets in General:

Sometimes you are up at the cabin, filleting fish, and the smell lingers. Sometimes you are at home and your carpets begin to remind you of that smell when there are no fish nearby. You will want to get your carpets professionally cleaned. We do not recommend renting a carpet cleaner. Read here why.

There are other things you can do to keep your carpets smelling fresh.

Freshening Agents:

Never sprinkle your entire carpet with baking soda and vacuum; always purchase the specific carpet deodorizers. It is an easy fix when humidity levels rise, but to remove the odors from carpets, you will want a professional carpet cleaning. We do not recommend plugins to help with carpet odors either.

Consider professional carpet cleaning when you have smelly carpets.

In Conclusion

When you find yourself with smelly carpets, first determine the cause. If you have smelly carpets because of too much humidity, run a dehumidifier and turn on your air conditioning. Opening windows for fresh air only adds to the humidity levels in your home. If you have musty smells from mold, you will

need a mitigation service and can contact us here for an evaluation.

Smelly carpets are serious business in the summertime. It is our business. Call us to schedule a professional cleaning today!
